Andrew J. (Jack) Caldwell
Andrew J. (Jack) Caldwell, 89, of Fredericksburg, died Monday, Oct. 15, 2018.
A memorial Mass was celebrated at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Harper with the Rev. Martine Avila Garcia officiating.
Military honors were accorded prior to the Mass.
Private interment of the cremains is planned at a later date.
Arrangements were under the direction of Schaetter Funeral Home.
Caldwell was born Dec. 18, 1928, in Nelson, Georgia, the son of Andrew J. Caldwell Sr. and Catherine Moran Caldwell. He married Mary E. Smullen in 1952, and she survives.
After graduating from high school in 1948, Caldwell enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served four years.
After his enlistment, he returned to Marietta, Georgia where he worked for the police department as a motorcycle officer, followed by director of civil defense for the city.
After earning bachelor of business administration and bachelor of law degrees, Caldwell joined the Federal Bureau of Investigation as a special agent in 1959.
He served in a number of locations as an agent, including New York, Puerto Rico, McAllen and Monterrey, Mexico. He retired from the FBI in 1979.
Following retirement, Caldwell served as chief of police in McAllen, until full retirement in Fredericksburg.
In addition to his wife, Caldwell is survived by two daughters and two sons, and spouses including Col. (Ret.) Michael and Janie Caldwell of Harper, Theresa and Jim Lutze of Boerne, Mark Caldwell and Catherine Caldwell, both of Fredericksburg.
Survivors also include six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one sister, Sara Scott of Georgia.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one grandson, Edward Lutze, and one sister, Bettye Varner.
Memorials may be made to St. Anthony Catholic Church, Ave Maria Hospice or to the charity of choice.
